JOHN F ROGERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Whip-smart, charismatic, and witty, the late John F. Rogers was a trusted advisor and a beloved friend to many. Throughout his life, John worked tirelessly to support and strengthen community organizations through his extensive volunteer efforts. Many of the Berkshire Family YMCA's most impactful projects benefited from John's involvement as both a volunteer and a mentor to the organization and its Board of Directors.
The loss of his foster brother, Henry Singleton, inspired John's passion for drug-related harm reduction. He was among the first in the country to raise awareness about the dangers of opioid over-prescription. John dedicated himself to advancing local efforts to combat the opioid epidemic, collaborating with local municipalities, the Berkshire County District Attorney, and the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office.
His deep insights and forward-thinking approach enabled community organizations to succeed in ways that were not always visible but were crucial for navigating complex legal issues and shaping effective programs. In honor of John's dedication to the Y, we have named our financial assistance program John F. Rogers Memorial Scholarship to express our gratitude.
LET US HELP
With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility, Berkshire Family YMCA ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive. BFYMCA welcomes all who wish to participate and believes that no one should be denied access to the Y based on their ability to pay. Through the John Roger's Memorial Scholarship program, BFYMCA provides assistance to youth, adults and families based on individual needs and circumstances.
"For multiple years, the Y has provided a scholarship that enables me to continue to maintain a level of physical activity that ensures my ability to remain self-sufficient. It not only provides programs, equipment, and instruction to maintain this level of exercise, but also provides social interaction with staff and others my age. Thank you for all that you do."
Determining assistance amounts is handled by BFYMCA in a fair and consistent manner. Every Y member receives the same membership benefits, regardless of whether or not they receive a scholarship. Y members can feel confident knowing they are a part of an organization that cares greatly for the well-being of all people, and is committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
